Is platinum worth more than gold today?

No, not by weight. On August 25, 2026, the World Platinum Investment Council described platinum as trading significantly below the price of gold. Colombia's central bank, which publishes both metals from London benchmark prices, certified gold at about 2.4 times the price of platinum per gram for October 2026. That multiple is our arithmetic from its two figures. For scale, the World Gold Council reports that gold averaged US$4,262 per ounce across the third quarter of 2026.

Both prices move every trading day and independently of each other, so check our live spot prices before you read too much into any single date.

Why is a rarer metal not always the more expensive one?

Rarity is only half of a price. The other half is who wants the metal and why, and the two metals answer that very differently. Platinum leans on industry. In WPIC's 2025 figures, the automotive sector took 35 percent of platinum demand, and supply is concentrated: South Africa produced about 71 percent of mined platinum that year, with Russia and Zimbabwe next.

Gold leans on money. The World Gold Council reports that central banks added a net 321 tonnes to their reserves in the third quarter of 2026, gold ETFs added 211 tonnes, and bar and coin buyers took 268 tonnes, out of 1,369 tonnes of total demand. That is demand from institutions and savers rather than factories, so a scarcer metal can still be the cheaper one.

What changes the answer for the piece you own?

Spot prices compare pure metal. What you hold is a particular weight at a particular purity, in a particular form.

VariablePlatinumGold
PurityBullion is usually .9995 fine. Jewelry is often marked PT, Plat, or 950.Jewelry runs from 10K to 24K.
WeightValue follows the pure platinum in the piece.Value follows the pure gold in the piece.

Collector valueLimited-mintage coins can be worth more than their metal.Rare coins can be worth more than their metal.

A worked example shows why purity matters. A 10-gram ring marked 950 holds 9.5 grams of platinum. A 10-gram 18K ring holds 7.5 grams of gold, because 18K is 75 percent gold. The platinum ring holds more precious metal, yet at the October 2026 multiple above, the 18K ring's gold would be the more valuable of the two. That is a comparison of metal content on one date, not an offer on either piece.

When is it worth getting a platinum piece checked?

Check any white metal you cannot identify. Platinum and white gold can look alike, and a stamp alone does not prove the metal, so an unmarked ring or an old piece with a worn mark is worth testing. The evaluation is free, and there is no obligation to sell.

This guide is general information about how precious metals are valued, not financial advice; what any piece is worth is settled at the counter after testing.
