What your gold is worth, karat by karat.
Gold is valued by its share of pure gold, times its weight, times today’s spot price. As of November 2, 2026 at 10:25 PM CST, 14K is worth $73.61 a gram and 18K $94.70 a gram. That is melt value: a reference to check any offer against, not an offer itself.

Today’s gold value per gram, by karat.
A karat is a share of 24. Pure gold is 24 karat, so 18K is 18 parts gold in 24 and 14K is 14 parts. Multiply the day’s price of pure gold by that share and you have what one gram of each karat is worth as metal.
These are melt values, the worth of the pure gold inside, not what any buyer pays. We weigh, test, and price every piece at the counter, and the quote you get in person or by phone is the one that applies.

Work out your own piece.
Two chains stamped 14K can be worth very different amounts, because the stamp tells you the share of gold and only the scale tells you how much there is. Pick the karat on your piece, type its weight in grams, and the calculator does the rest with today’s price.
A kitchen or postal scale that reads to a tenth of a gram gets you close. A piece with stones or a steel clasp spring weighs more than the gold in it, so for those the result runs high; the next section explains why.

How to read a karat stamp.
The stamp picks your row in the table above, so it is worth a minute with a magnifying glass. Four kinds of mark turn up.
- 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K
- The karat mark, usually found inside a ring band or on a clasp.
- 417, 585, 750, 916
- The same karats written as parts per thousand of gold: 585 is 14K and 750 is 18K. A ring stamped 750 is worth more per gram than one stamped 14K.
- GP, GEP, HGE, RGP, GF
- Gold plated, electroplated, or filled. The gold is a thin layer over another metal, so these pieces carry very little gold, even when a karat number appears beside the letters.
- No mark at all
- Stamps wear away, and older, handmade, and foreign pieces are often never marked. An unmarked piece is tested and valued like any other.
We read the stamp first, then confirm every piece with an acid or electronic test in front of you. More on how we sort and test is on our page about selling gold jewelry.
Why the scale reads less than the piece weighs.
Your kitchen scale weighs everything on the piece. We value only the gold, so anything that is not gold is accounted for before the weight that counts is read: stones, steel springs, and clasps made of another metal.
Diamonds of real size are valued on their own and added to the offer, apart from the gold. Small accent stones and most colored gems are not, so their weight comes off. You do not need to take anything out first.
Mixed karats are never weighed together. A 10K chain and an 18K ring go on the scale in separate groups, so each is multiplied by its own purity and you can see exactly what is being weighed.
Melt value versus what you are offered.
No buyer sets the price of gold, including us, so melt value is public: you can work it out before you come in.
Some pieces are worth more than their gold. Signed pieces from known houses, antique and estate jewelry with real demand, and working luxury watches can be worth more intact than melted. We will tell you when that is the case and price the piece that way, never below melt for that reason.
- Melt value
- The pure gold in your piece at today’s spot price: weight × purity × price per gram. For scrap gold it is the ceiling, and it is the number on this page.
- Our offer
- Built from melt value, less refining and our margin. We show each line at the counter before you decide, and you are welcome to take the number home without selling a thing.
- An insurance appraisal
- The cost of replacing the piece at retail. It is not what any buyer pays, so do not be surprised when it and an offer differ.
The longer explanation, with how the spot price is set, is in our guide to spot price versus melt value. For all four metals at once, see our live spot prices, and to bring a piece in or ask a question first, contact us.

Selling gold jewelryHow much is 18K gold worth?
18K gold is 75 percent pure gold, so one gram of 18K is worth three quarters of the day’s price for a gram of pure gold, before any buyer’s margin. Multiply that per-gram figure by your piece’s gold weight for its melt value.
How much is a 14K gold chain worth?
A 14K chain is worth its gold weight in grams × 0.583 × today’s gold price per gram. Chains of the same length vary a great deal in weight, so the only reliable figure comes from weighing yours. A steel spring or a clasp made of another metal is accounted for before the gold is weighed.
How much is 10K gold worth per gram?
10K gold is 41.7 percent pure gold, so a gram of 10K is worth 0.417 times the day’s price for a gram of pure gold as melt value. It is the lowest karat sold as solid gold in the US, and we buy it, from charms to class rings.
Is 18K gold worth more than 14K per gram?
Yes. A gram of 18K holds 0.75 grams of pure gold and a gram of 14K holds 0.583, so at any spot price a gram of 18K is worth about 1.29 times a gram of 14K. The ratio stays the same as the market moves, even though both figures change through the day.
Does a broken piece of 14K gold pay less?
No. Gold is bought by the gram, and broken pieces pay the same per gram as whole ones. A snapped chain, a bent ring, or a single earring is valued on its karat and weight, because condition does not change the metal.
What if my piece has no karat stamp?
It can still be valued and bought. We test the metal itself, so a missing stamp does not change what a solid gold piece is worth.
Is white gold valued differently from yellow gold?
Not by the gram. White and yellow gold of the same karat hold the same share of pure gold; the color comes from the other metals in the alloy. A 14K white gold ring and a 14K yellow gold ring of the same weight have the same melt value, and we buy both.
